Removing or installing the ion transfer tube requires the custom tool that is provided in the TSQ Source Installation Kit. This kit includes two ion transfer tube removal tools. The tool you need depends on whether the ion transfer tube is secured by a quarter-turn pin or a threaded fitting.

Follow the appropriate procedure for your TSQ Series II MS:

Remove an ion transfer tube that is secured with a quarter-turn pin
(TSQ Altis Plus, TSQ Altis, and TSQ Quantiva)

Procedure

  1. Remove the API source housing. See Maintain the API source housing.
  2. Remove the ion sweep cone by grasping its outer ridges and pulling it away from API source interface. See Remove the ion sweep cone.
  3. Align the flat end of the 1/4 turn ion transfer tube removal tool with the flat edges on the ion transfer tube’s nose cone.
  4. Rotate the tube counterclockwise by a quarter turn to release the pins behind the nose cone that secure the tube to the spray cone.

  6. Use the other end of the tool to pull the tube out of the API source interface.

    Use this end of the tool to rotate the tube counterclockwise by a 1/4 turn, releasing it from the spray cone.

    Use this end of the tool to hook onto the released tube and pull it out of the spray cone.

Procedure

  1. Align the hook end of the ion transfer tube removal tool with the flat edges of the ion transfer tube’s nose cone.
  2. Rotate the ion transfer tube counterclockwise until its threaded nose cone is free of the API interface.
  3. TIP

    If necessary, insert a hex key through the side hole in the tool and use it for leverage.
