Remove the API source housing from the MS
Procedure
- Turn off the liquid flow from the syringe pump or the liquid chromatograph, as applicable.
- In the Tune application, select System Standby
to place the MS in Standby mode.
CAUTION
Hot surface
The external surface of the housing can be hot enough to burn your skin. Allow the housing to cool to room temperature (approximately 20 minutes) before you touch it.
- In the Ion Source pane, set the Ion Transfer Tube Temperature and Vaporizer Temperature to 50 °C or less and observe the readback temperatures.
- After the source cools to room temperature, remove the source housing. Refer to the ion source user guide for information about removing and installing the ion source.
TIP
To access the ion source user guides that are available from the Tune window, select Settings
. Then, from the drop-down menu, select Instrument Manuals, choose the PDF that you want to view, and select Open.
Clean the API source housing
Procedure
- Make sure that the source housing is cooled to room temperature. Then, remove the API source housing.
- Put on appropriate personal protective equipment, in particular safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves.
- Under an appropriate fume hood, wipe down the interior of the housing with lint-free tissues sprayed with UHPLC/MS grade methanol.
- Allow the housing to dry before you reinstall it on the MS.
IMPORTANT
When you are not using the MS for short periods of time, keep the MS in Standby mode. In Standby mode, a constant stream of nitrogen exits the API source interface, keeping particulate matter from entering the MS.
