When you restart the MS system after a complete shutdown, follow these steps to restart the system.

  1. Restart the MS system afer a complete shutdown
  2. Restart the MS system afer a complete shutdown

Restart the data system computer

If possible, use the Microsoft Windows restart procedure so that the operating system can properly close applications and save changes to any open application.

NOTE

After you restart the data system computer, the communications link between the data system and the MS is automatically reestablished. When this occurs, the Communication LED turns yellow and then green. If the system is unable to reestablish the communications link, see Reset the MS if it is not communicating with the data system.

Procedure

  1. Do one of the following:
  2. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE on the keyboard. Select Power at the lower right corner of the monitor screen and then select Restart.
  3. From the Windows taskbar, select Start and choose Power > Restart.
  4. Press the data system computer’s power button and wait at least 20 seconds for the system to shutdown. The press the power button again to power on the system.

Pump down and restart the MS after a complete shutdown

Before you can operate the MS, you must pump down the system. Make sure that the data system is running before you turn on the MS.

Procedure

  1. Open the argon and nitrogen gas lines at the tanks if they are closed. Then, check the gas supplies. See Check the argon and nitrogen gas supplies.
  2. Ensure that the Main Power switch is off and that the Electronics service switch is in the Service Mode position.
  3. If you disconnected the MS from line power, reconnect it to line power. If you disconnected a forepump for the MS from line power, reconnect it.
  4. Turn on the Main Power switch.
  5. Placing the Main Power switch in the On position turns on the turbomolecular pumps and any forepump that is connected to the MS (through the Pump Enable connector). All LEDs on the front panel of the MS remain off.
  6. Wait 15 minutes before you place the Electronics service switch in the Operating Mode (up) position.
  7. Wait at least 15 hours for the forepumps and the turbomolecular pumps to create sufficient vacuum.

IMPORTANT

On the front panel, the Vacuum LED illuminates green only when the pressure in the mass analyzer region, as measured by the ionization gauge, is below the maximum allowable pressure of 1 × 10–4 Torr.

  1. Open the Tune application by double-clicking Tune on the desktop. Then, open the Status pane and double-click Vacuum.
  2. The following figure shows the Status pane in the Tune window.
