The following table describes the buttons and icons available at the top of the Tune application window.

Button

Description

On mode: Indicates the MS is on and is ready for operation. All voltages, the sheath gas, the auxiliary gas, and the sweep gas are on.

For additional details on the MS operation, see System Startup, Shutdown, and Reset.

NOTE You set the instrument power mode options from the Tune application or data system. When a power mode is active, the center of the selected icon changes from white to green.

Standby mode: Indicates the MS is in standby. In standby, the electron multiplier, conversion dynodes, 8 kV power to the source housing, main RF voltage, and ion optic RF voltages are off. The sheath, auxiliary, and sweep gases remain on and return to their default settings (2 arbitrary units).

Standby mode is the normal condition to leave the MS in when it is not in use for short periods of time.

Off mode: Indicates the MS is off. When off, all high voltages and the ion gauge are turned off. The sheath, auxiliary, and sweep gases remain on and return to their default settings (2 arbitrary units).

When you remove the source housing or the spray insert, the MS automatically switches to Off mode.

Indicates the ion polarity mode (positive or negative).

For more details, see Ion Polarity Modes.

Indicates the data type (profile or centroid).

For more details, see Data Types.

Indicates whether the scan averaging feature is off or on. If scan averaging is turned on, enter a scan averaging value.

Indicates the valve position (1-2 or 1-6) of the optional divert/inject valve. The downward arrow opens the following options:

  • A
  • B

Indicates whether the syringe pump is off or on. If the syringe pump is turned on, you can enter the syringe pump flow rate and syringe volume.

  • Flow rate (µL/min): Varies upon the syringe size
  • Volume: 50, 100, 250, 500, 1,000, and 10,000

Holding the Prime button primes the syringe at 100 μL/min.

Indicates the nitrogen collision cell gas pressure (in milliTorr).

Range: 1–10; Default: 8

A set of data acquisition control buttons to control the manual acquisition of sample data.

For more details, see Data Acquisition Controls.

Readback Status Icon

This is a read-only icon that changes to display the current MS instrument state.

Normal

Indicates that the MS instrument parameters are within tolerance.

Initializing

Indicates that the system is initializing.

Changing settings

Indicates that one or more settings are changing.

Error

Indicates that an error has occurred.

Ion source Off

Indicates that the ion source is off.

Disconnected

Indicates that there is no communication between the MS and the data system.
