The drainage system begins with a built-in drainage port located at the bottom of the API source interface on the front of the MS. An internal tube connects the built-in drainage port to the drain/waste port on the left side of the MS. A solvent waste container is connected to the drain/waste on the left side of the MS and the laboratory exhaust system.

CAUTION

  • Your lab must have two fume exhaust systems at minimum. The MS analyzer optics can become contaminated if the MS drain/waste tubing and the forepump exhaust tubing connect to the same exhaust system.
  • The dedicated exhaust system for the API source must be actively vented and accommodate a flow rate of up to 30 L/min (64 ft3/h).

CAUTION

Trip hazard

During the installation, route the tubing so that it is not a trip hazard.

NOTE

Tygon tubing (1 in. ID) is provided with the instrument shipment. To prevent solvent waste from backing up into the instrument, make sure that the following portions of Tygon tubing are above the level of liquid in the waste container:

  • Tubing from the MS to the solvent waste container
  • Tubing from the waste container to the lab exhaust system

The following figure shows the drainage system connected to a dedicated lab exhaust system.
