External devices (for example, autosamplers, LC pumps, and detectors) are controlled through contact closure cables, which can be controlled via a Thermo Scientific mass spectrometry application, such as the Xcalibur data system. For instructions on how to set the external device that data acquisition begins on, see Select the Start Instrument.

The MS can start data acquisition upon receiving a contact closure (start) signal from an external LC device, which is typically an autosampler. Thermo Scientific mass spectrometry applications can control external devices from several manufacturers, including Agilent Technologies and Waters Corporation. When the external device is not controlled by a Thermo Scientific mass spectrometry application, you must properly connect the external device to send its contact closure signal to the MS.

TIP

To help prevent sample waste if the MS becomes unresponsive, connect a cable between the optional LC device and the Ready Out and Injection Hold pins (see Communications Panel). Then, configure the Contact Closure settings in the Method Editor. You are responsible for providing the cable for these connections.

Prerequisites

  1. Verify that the external device is compatible for use with the MS. Make sure that the signal from the external device meets the requirements as stated in the Peripheral Control (Pin #4) description (see Communications Panel). If it does not meet the requirement, you cannot use the external device with the MS.

Procedure

  1. Locate the two-wire contact closure cable provided with your LC device.
  2. Attach the green contact closure connector plug to the contact closure cable.
  3. Install the green contact closure connector plug cover over the connector plug.
  4. NOTE

The green contact closure connector plug and cover are supplied in the Setup Kit.
