The following figure shows the power module located on the right side of the MS with the Electronics switch in the Service Mode position and the Main Power switch in the Off position.

To restart the MS system after a complete shutdown, follow this procedure.

Prerequisites

  1. Power on the data system computer.

Procedure

  1. Open the helium gas and nitrogen gas lines at the gas tanks and check the gas supplies. See Check the Gas Supplies.
  2. Verify that the Electronics switch is in the Service Mode position and the Main Power switch is in the Off position.
  3. Connect the MS and forepump power cords, if applicable.
  4. Turn on the Main Power switch.
  5. Placing the Main Power switch in the On position turns on the turbomolecular pump and forepump that is connected to the MS (through the Pump Enable connector). All LEDs on the front panel of the MS remain off.
  6. Wait 15 minutes, then turn the Electronics switch to the Operating Mode (up) position.
  7. Wait approximately 4 hours for the forepump and the turbomolecular pump to create sufficient vacuum.
  8. NOTE

If the MS was shutdown for an extended period of time, the pump down process can take approximately 12 hours or more to create sufficient vacuum.

  9. Open the Tune application and select the Status pane. Then, select the downward arrow and select By Board.
  10. Select Source to expand the parameters list.
  11. Verify that the Source Pressure and Ion Gauge Pressure readbacks are at the following typical values:
  12. - Source pressure: 2–3 Torr
  13. - Ion Gauge pressure: 4–5 × 10–5 Torr

The following table describes the front panel LED indicators during the restart process.

NOTE

  • The Vacuum LED illuminates green only when the pressure in the mass analyzer region, as measured by the ionization gauge, is below the maximum allowable pressure of 1 × 10–4 Torr.
  • The communications link between the MS and the data system is automatically established. When this occurs, the Communication LED turns yellow and then green. If the system is unable to establish the communications link, see Reset the MS.
