The filter types (filters, triggers, and alternate precursor ion sorts) determine which ions pass or do not pass to the next stage (node) of mass analysis. When you add an appropriate filter to the experiment workflow, which can be above or below a scan node, the Method Editor displays its properties pane, which is where you can modify the filter parameters.
