Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends that a Full Data Backup be taken prior to upgrading Ardia Server. A Full Data Backup consists of the raw data files, the documents, and the PostgreSQL databases.

If it is not feasible to perform a Full Data Backup, but the data must be retained and the risk of data loss is accepted, Thermo Fisher Scientific advises that the following alternative strategy is employed to mitigate any data loss resulting from unforeseen issues during the upgrade process.

  1. Utilizing the pg_dump command creates a backup of all PostgreSQL databases and can then be used to restore them.
  2. The state of the Ubuntu LTS operating system including platform services and the infrastructure metadata is captured such that there is an easy-means to rollback.

IMPORTANT

This strategy requires downtime of the Ardia Platform. The downtime extends from the initiation of either step until after the upgrade has completed successfully or the Ubuntu LTS operating system has been recovered including the restoration of the PostgreSQL databases. Failure to ensure downtime can potentially result in new and modified data being lost but also a failure to recover and rollback.

IMPORTANT

Downtime means that no users or clients are connected to Ardia Platform, no data is being sent or being accessed, no jobs are running, all processing activities are stopped. Essentially a maintenance windows needs to be established such that Ardia Platform is not in use in any way.
